JOB SUMMARY:

Under the guidance and supervision of the surgeon, participates as
a member of the OR team in planning, preparing, and producing a
safe and effective OR experience for patients undergoing surgery.
Under the direction and supervision of qualified professional
registered nurses and in accordance with established procedures and
aseptic principles, the Surgical Technologist - First Assistant is
responsible for the set-up and maintenance of the surgical field
and assists the surgeon during operative procedures. Possesses the
ability to scrub all cases in all services and demonstrates
knowledge of instrumentation, their uses, and accurate methods of
sterilization and maintains an aseptic controlled environment.
Assists in processes to streamline care, reduce inefficiency,
improve quality, and reduce costs. Supports the philosophy and
goals of OSS Health.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION:
Education:
- High School diploma or GED required.
Qualifications:
- Certification as a Surgical First Assistant required.
- Requires a minimum of two years of experience as a Surgical
Technologist, with one year of experience as First Assist
preferred.
- BLS certification required.
- Must have the ability to effectively and efficiently make use of
time and resources and be able to plan and organize work.
- Must have proficient computer skills.
- Must have professional and effective communication skills and be
able to promote effective communication at all levels.
- Must be able to adapt to changes in the workload and work as part
of the team to finish the schedule as observed.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Prepares and checks assigned cases for appropriate instruments,
sutures, supplies and equipment necessary for each procedure.
Checks assigned OR equipment before case to ensure proper
functioning; immediately reports any inoperative or malfunctioning
equipment.
- Follows aseptic technique when opening sterile supplies, setting
up cases, scrubbing, gowning, and draping as observed. Reports any
break in aseptic technique.
- Maintains an orderly back table and mayo stand during procedure
following established routine set-up as observed.
- Assists circulating nurse in performing sponge, needle, and
instrument counts; immediately reports discrepancies and/or
corrections as documented and observed.
- Consistently demonstrates proper handling of instruments and
equipment to avoid damage and loss as observed.
- Keeps surgeons' preference cards up-to-date as documented and
observed.
- Demonstrates an ability to perform scrub duties as outlined in
procedure manual, as observed.
- Assists with application of dressings and transfers patient.
Applies any other specific dressing material such as splints or
cast, assesses skin integrity, assists in transfer of the patient
and follows the patient to recovery if needed or directed by
surgeon.
- Assists with general cleaning of room and sets up next case as
observed.
- Assists other staff members with completion of routine duties of
the department as observed.
- Facilities the safe positioning of the patient according to the
surgeons preferences, patients anatomical and physiological limits
and surgical procedure to be performed.
- Assists circulator and anesthesia provider in preparation of the
patient to include but not limited to Foley catheter placement,
tourniquet application, placement of intravenous catheters, cricoid
pressure application, and other procedures as needed.
- Performs specific tasks according to individual surgeon
preference utilizing appropriate techniques, including but not
limited to incision and layered closure of surgical sites,
providing exposure, achieving hemostasis by means of injection,
manual and topical methods, and application of appropriate energy
sources, manipulation and dissection/removal of tissues, aides in
implanting, securing and/or removal of devices and drains, and
applying appropriate dressing material specific to procedure.
- May also perform other procedures under surgeon supervision, such
as casting, allograft and implant preparation. Performs additional
duties as delegated by the surgeon in cooperation with state and
local policy.
- Maintains confidentiality of all patient, Center, and physician
information; respects the patient's privacy.
- Demonstrates an awareness of patient safety and proper body
mechanics when moving patients or equipment.
- Demonstrates a thorough knowledge of departmental safety policies
and procedures; participates in identification and evaluation of
potential department safety problems and precautions as observed
and documented.
- Adheres to department specific OSHA and infection control
guidelines regarding health maintenance and infection prevention
100% of the time as observed and documented.
- May function as backup in the instrument room - must be able to
wash, sterilize and wrap instruments.
- Assists with the orientation of new personnel as assigned. May
train newly hired staff as assigned.
- Other duties as assigned.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
No direct reports to this position
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Ability to communicate effectively with staff, peers, physicians
and the public. Ability to speak and understand English
fluently.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Moderate physical effort working in an indoor environment. Moderate
sitting and keyboarding. Efforts consisting of standing, walking,
pushing, pulling, bending, reaching, and stooping. Frequently
lifting and/or moving up to 25 pounds with occasional lifting and
moving of a maximum of 50 pounds. Must be able to respond quickly
and effectively to an emergency.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Exposed to bloodborne pathogens, anesthetic gases, sterilizers,
electrical and mechanical hazards, confused or combative patients
bio-contaminated waste and unpleasant elements. Subject to
stressful situations; occasional long or irregular hours.
